Celebrating 50 Golden Years
of LAMDA in America

In 1956, at the request of the Fulbright Commission, LAMDA established a One Year Classical Acting Course specifically for American students. This course marked the beginning of a thriving relationship with the United States; bringing such talented American actors as Margot Harley, Edward Herrmann, Dana Ivey, Swoosie Kurtz, John Lithgow and Donald Sutherland across the Atlantic to train at LAMDA. On Wednesday 25th April 2007, the Academy celebrated the Golden Anniversary of this affiliation with an exclusive In Conversation with Margot Harley and the Hon. Harriet Mayor Fulbright at the Helen Mills Theater in New York City.

With an audience of fellow Academy alumni and industry guests, Margot Harley shared her memories as one of LAMDA's original Fulbright Scholars, as well as highlights from three decades as the Founder and Producing Artistic Director of The Acting Company. She was joined on stage by the Hon. Harriet Mayor Fulbright, who spoke of the Fulbright Commission's ongoing promotion of cultural excellence through international educational exchange.

Welcoming guests to the event, chaired by rising young director and alumnus Davis McCallum, LAMDA Chairman Luke Rittner said: "Over the years, our relationship with the US has continued to grow, enabling us to train hundreds of American actors, directors, stage managers and theatre technicians alike. We are thrilled to celebrate reaching this landmark year with so many of our talented students, past and present".
