The York Realist

By Peter Gill

An amateur production by arrangement with Samuel French Ltd.

Director: Colin Cook
Designer: Richard Bullwinkle

Farm labourer George lives contentedly with his family in their 1960’s Yorkshire cottage. But when he is cast as a centurion in the local amateur dramatics production of the York Mystery Plays he encounters John, the engaging Assistant Director from London. But can he reconcile his desire for a new life with his deep loyalty to his family and home?

Peter Gill occupies a central role in modern British theatre. The founder-Director of both Riverside Studios and the National Theatre Studio – and the director of numerous productions at these venues as well as the Royal Court, the Almeida and the RSC – his immense creativity is dazzlingly exhibited in this tender and profound human drama. He is also reunited in this production with Emeritus Vice-Principal, and Honorary Fellow of the Academy, Colin Cook following their work at the RSC in 1974.

Meat / Money / Jesus

By Mark Ravenhill

A World Premiere.

Director:  Hester Chillingworth
Designer: Richard Bullwinkle

"One night I knew I was lost. I was studying. A little bedroom in a big hall of residence.  And suddenly – over me – this great desolation. And what did I do? I went to my computer and I used google and I typed in the words ‘How can I be saved?’ I pressed search. It’s true. And my computer showed me the Jesus Family and I thought: That’s the answer".

Researched and developed with LAMDA students, Mark Ravenhill’s new play explores a world of lost memories and shattered identities. Does the evangelical Christian community the Jesus Family offer a life-line? Or are they preying on the weak?

The Libertine

By Stephen Jeffreys

An amateur production by arrangement with Nick Hern Books Ltd.

Director: Peter James
Designer: Richard Bullwinkle

England, 1660. With the restoration of Charles II to the English throne, the curtain rises on a new age of science, art and passion. And none is more passionate than John Wilmot, the notorious Earl of Rochester. Wracked by the pressure of genius (as well as the odd colourful disease) Wilmot tumbles from one reckless seduction to another. Although a brave and much decorated soldier, Rochester fears death and the darkness in equal measure – yet courts both deliberately. But in the quest for ever more intoxicating pleasure, is the rakish anti-hero dashing towards his own destruction?

Sunday Times Playwriting Award winner, and former Literary Associate of the Royal Court Theatre, Stephen Jeffreys is particularly celebrated for his mastery of historical drama.  Both witty and exuberant, The Libertine captures all that is repulsive and seductive in one of history’s most engaging figures – and his debauched flight from the nothingness he feared.
