LAMDA has been fuelling the dramatic arts industry in the UK and beyond for over 150 years – teaching the craft, nurturing talent and igniting the imagination of the actors, directors, stage managers and technicians of the future.

This work is underpinned by a belief in the importance of the performing arts and a desire to ensure they are accessible to all.

LAMDA recruits on talent alone. We are proactive, auditioning every drama school applicant at 20 UK regional and international audition centres – from Newcastle to New York. Our training is vocational, so academic qualifications are not required. We offer extensive student support so that no one is prevented from training due to their financial background. This rigorous process ensures that we are open to everyone and we find the best.

We prepare our graduates for sustainable careers within the industry. Over 80% of professional acting students leave LAMDA with agent representation, whilst 90% of Stage Management & Technical Theatre students find relevant employment within weeks of graduation. You can see the results of LAMDA’s training at the National Theatre, the RSC, in the West End and on Broadway, as well as on the BBC, HBO and in Hollywood.

Alongside our training, we seek to engage with the largest number of people from the widest range of backgrounds. Each year LAMDA opens its doors to over 13,000 people - including local residents, school groups and young people - through free tickets for our shows, workshops and events. Our reach extends even further through LAMDA Examinations, the UK’s leading statutory awarding body for speech and drama. With over 86,000 candidates worldwide each year, LAMDA Examinations encourage a lifelong appreciation of the spoken word in people of all ages.

LAMDA’s mission is important, and not only because art ‘washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life’*. According to UNESCO, the UK is the world’s largest exporter of cultural goods. 6.2% of the UK’s local income (GVA) comes from the creative industries, the arts provide over 2 million jobs and are mentioned by 8 out of 10 tourists as a reason for their visit. In 2010, the Arts took about 0.07% out of the public purse and put £2 back for every pound invested**.

To continue our work, we need your help.
